Commenting on Your Views and the story: Hindley Street upgrade to prioritise pedestrians, outdoor dining

Does Hindley Street need to be a two-way street for vehicles? Converting it to a one-way would allow for better parking options, more room for outdoor dining and create a safer environment for all. – Robin Sands

Commenting on the story: Court challenge to Rundle St tower rejection

Congratulations to SCAP for standing up to be counted. From New York to Rio it is overwhelmingly to lower-rise sociable main streets such as the East End, Norwood Parade or Hyde Park that residents go to relax and ‘escape the rat race’.

As a small city Adelaide has few enough of these areas already. It’s partly why, unfairly, Adelaide is seen as dull. Rundle Street East is our stand out success story, our one and only must-visit zone. With its edgier retail offerings and hospitality it works hard for the local economy of the City of Adelaide.

This already hard-working area should not have to carry the additional burden of increasing our population density. It is its human scale- the rich mix of colour and detail and sunlight that to a pedestrian unfolds step by step – that is precisely its drawcard.

With high rise approvals up go land values and so, gradually, up go rents, which drives out the edgier small businesses that make these streets so visitor-welcoming in the first place. Even before the first brick is laid higher-rise approvals eat away at an area’s vibrancy.

The simplistic notion that higher rise for these areas equals more people equals greater vibrancy threatens our city. It denies the power of constantly replenishing visitor footfall.

The height limits in place are already above the European six storeys that is so successful globally.

Rundle Street East is our only fully functioning human -scale main street precinct. It is our city’s calling card and cultural heart and it is absolutely vital for Adelaide that it not be threatened with a slow death spiral. – Robert Farnan

Commenting on the story: 1000 homes planned for former West End brewery site

As the SA Government is now the proud owner of the former West End site and located on the green space of the linear park, perhaps some consideration could be given to the fact that this is a site suitably and strategically located for housing the SA Police Greys. Or is that too logical? – Sozo Nikias
