Jedinak back as Socceroos set for China
Captain Mile Jedinak will return for the Socceroos' quarter final against China.
The return of captain Mile Jedinak from injury is among five changes Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is tipped to make for the Asian Cup quarter-final against China.
Jedinak on Tuesday evening passed a fitness test on his injured left ankle and will return from a two-match absence in Thursday night’s knockout final in Brisbane.
Postecoglou is also expected to summon his key attacking trio Tim Cahill, Robbie Kruse and Mathew Leckie to his starting line-up after all were deployed from the bench in last Saturday night’s loss to South Korea.
Defender Alex Wilkinson will also start against a buoyant China, replacing suspended centre-back Matthew Spiranovic.
China enter the Suncorp Stadium fixture unbeaten in their three group games, with Australia banking two wins and a loss.
Postecoglou’s changes continue a theme after making all players aware before the tournament began that he would tinker with his starting side, attacking midfielder Leckie says.
“He just said he would be changing the squad throughout this whole tournament, knowing that if we do play the whole six games it’s going to be difficult to be able to play at the highest level for all games,” Leckie said.
“He always said he was going to rotate the squad so I’m sure he will continue to do that.”
Leckie was among a batch of players to be rested from a light training session on Tuesday evening when Jedinak proved his fitness.
The skipper appeared untroubled by his ankle ailment when performing a series of agility, sprint and passing drills away from the main body of training.
Leckie, Massimo Luongo, Robbie Kruse, Matt McKay and Tomi Juric were among players to do nothing more than stretching exercises at training.
