Hundreds of AFL identities will join some of Phil Walsh’s family at a private memorial service for the slain AFL coach on Wednesday.

Walsh was allegedly murdered by his 26-year-old son on July 3.

His wife Meredith and daughter Quinn will attend the service, though son Cy remains in a secure psychiatric facility after being charged with murder.

He has not entered a plea and is due to appear in court in September.

A church funeral for Walsh, a 55-year-old who was in his first season as coach of the Adelaide Crows, was held last Friday.

Wednesday’s memorial, to be held at Adelaide Oval from 3pm, is expected to include guests from the AFL and all its clubs, as well as Crows players and staff, and other football identities who knew Walsh from his 32-year playing and coaching career in the AFL.

The memorial is another landmark in the most poignant lead-up to a Showdown in the 18-year history of the rivalry.

As a sign of how different Sunday afternoon’s match will be, Crows and Power players will run onto the ground through a joint banner.

For fans without tickets to the Port Adelaide home game, three big screens will be available in Elder Park so that Adelaide supporters – and others – can watch the match in the company of others.

Crows CEO Andrew Fagan said the club believed it was important Adelaide fans had a place to watch the match together.
