Woodville, East Torrens Payneham, Sturt and East Fremantle Lacrosse clubs will compete against each other from Friday, April 12 until Sunday April 14 to mark the anniversaries.

Former player and life member of Woodville Lacrosse Club and Lacrosse SA historian Luke Oswald jumped at the chance to get the clubs together.

“I saw the opportunity there when I saw it was coming up to the 125-year anniversary and the fact that we could get the four teams together,” he said.

“It’s certainly a big one for our club and the remarkable thing about it is we’ve only got nine clubs in Adelaide, and around the country maybe 30, but all of these clubs (in the tournament) happened to be formed within the same year, within weeks of each other, and are still going.

“Three of them are based in Adelaide and the other one in based in Perth – the East Fremantle Club.”

After Oswald made sure the WA side could make the trip and complete the tournament line-up, it was named “The 500 Lacrosse Tournament“ to represent the years notched up by the four teams.

“East Fremantle are sending a men and women’s team over to Adelaide and they arrive on Friday night and it’ll be a great weekend,” Oswald said.

“They’re sending pretty strong teams as well, so it’ll be kind of a showcase and we’re hoping that people from the wider lacrosse community, as well as our clubs’ past players, will come down and watch these games.”

Although they don’t have time to hold a formal celebration between all the games, Oswald hopes the teams will get the opportunity to celebrate the weekend after the final games.

“We hope that after the event concludes on Sunday, sort of between the presentation of trophies and when the East Fremantle group have to fly back to Perth, that we’ll kick on a bit and celebrate what was good about the weekend,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic once in a generation opportunity and the intent to this is sort of a one-off celebration but it’s something that we need to make sure we do, celebrate our success and our longevity and hope we can continue for another 25-years or more.”

There is a possibility for lacrosse lovers to join in the fun with social games in the works.

“We’re looking to do some social fun games with people who aren’t playing so either older players or those who didn’t make the team,” Oswald said.

The tournament will be held at Sturt Lacrosse Club, located at Women’s Memorial Playing Fields at Shepherds Hill Road, St Marys.

Sturt and East Torrens Payneham men’s teams will kick things off on Friday at 7pm, followed by a clash between Sturt and Woodville women’s teams.

“The four clubs will all have a men’s and women’s team, so we’re sort of having a soft launch I guess on the Friday night,” Oswald said.

Finals will be played by the two top teams on Sunday 14 April with the women’s commencing at 11am and the men’s at 1pm.

Food and drinks will be available from the canteen run by Sturt Lacrosse Club all weekend in true local sports club fashion.
