The Mother’s Day weekend saw another jam-packed slate of South Aussie performances, including an Ivor Burge Championship win and Netball state team announcements.

Basketball

2021 U20 and Ivor Burge Championships

South Australia Red had a history-making week in the Ivor Burge Championships, taking out a win the gold medal game, beating Victoria 89 -70 in the final. Five South Aussies scored in double digits in the win, with Wayne Kinross grabbing a team-high 25 points and fellow teammate Zachary Georg-Dent grabbing a 13-point, 10 assist double-double. South Australia Red can look back on memorable wins over their championship run, including their 121- 28 thumping of Western Australia in the semi-finals.

Seven South Aussies reached double digits in scoring in that match, with Zachary Georg-Dent grabbing a team-high 21 points. Georg-Dent led the competition in assists, averaging 9.17 throughout the tournament. The South Australia Red U20 Men weren’t able to add to a strong weekend for the state, missing out on a bronze medal after losing to Victoria 100-77 in the Men’s Bronze medal match. Fiston Ipassou grabbed a team-high 21 points in the loss.

NBL1 Central

Sturt remains untouchable in the NBL1 Central, winning six of their last six games after beating Forestville in their Round 6 clash on Saturday night. Sturt’s Joel Spear grabbed a team-high 22 points along with seven rebounds and three assists to help his side to an eventual 96-91 win on the night. Sturt now sits atop of the NBL1 Central ladder, two wins ahead of the second-placed Woodville Warriors.

Netball

Netball SA has announced the final U19 State Team set to compete in the National Netball Championships in Hobart between July 4-11. In total, 12 South Australian netballers have been selected, with the Contax having the most athletes out of any team in the state, having three players in the squad. Some other players selected include Amelia Anderson and Phoebe Bonner from Garville, Alyssa Jones from Tango, and Kimberley Hearnden from the Matrics.

Contax, Oakdale and Garville all took out wins on Friday night to make it two wins from two to kick off their 2021 Premier League seasons. Oakdale took out a convincing 61-50 win over the fourth-placed Tango to send them second on the ladder for the time being. Contax pulled off an impressive performance against South Adelaide, cruising to a 74-36 win and sending them top of the table. Garville—who now sit third on the ladder—added a professional 50-40 win over the Newton Jaguars to add to their resume this season. The next round will see the Contax meet Oakdale in round 3, with both teams looking for a result to keep them at the top end of the table.

Lawn Bowls

The late Dr. Jack Petchell will be inducted into the Bowls SA Hall of Fame, recognising his 30-year career. The former 1947 Australian Singles Championship winner, and the first person in South Australia to win both the State Singles and Champion of Champion Singles titles in the 1959/60 season, will officially be inducted at the Bowls SA Awards Night held on Friday, May 21 at Morphettville Racecourse. The awards night will also feature both the 2020 and 2021 award winners after last year’s event was postponed due to COVID-19.

2020/2021 State Triples

The 2020/2021 State Triples, the final state event of the 20/21 season, was held at Grange Bowling Club on Saturday. Aaron Bremner, Samual Denton and Sam Dietrich took out a well contested 17-10 win over Jim Bell, Dennis Crawley and Steven Packer in the Men’s Final, crowning themselves Men’s State Triples Winners. Karen Gatto, Bailey Rafferty and Laini McGorman also took out a win in the Women’s Final, beating Tammy Butt, Patria McGrath and Carli Mitchell 20-8 to grab the title of Women’s State Triples Winners.
