RSPCA Give to Get Them Home
Today is RSPCA South Australia’s biggest donation day of the year Give To Get Them Home! Thanks to their generous matching partners, all donations made to the animal welfare charity will be doubled for today only.

Karma when she first arrived at RSPCA SA and later relaxing in her forever home
This year marks the charity’s sixth annual Give To Get Them Home day, raising vital funds to help sick, neglected and mistreated animals across our state.
Each year thousands of animals come through RSPCA SA’s doors in need of love and care. One of these animals was Karma – an American Staffordshire Terrier who was emaciated when she was seized by RSPCA SA Inspectors, having been starved by her former owner.
Seven-year-old Karma spent a year in the charity’s care before her former owner was prosecuted for animal cruelty. Thankfully, during that time she lived with volunteer foster carers as she recovered from the physical and psychological trauma of her past.
It was Karma’s last foster carers – Carlene and Adam – who decided to give her a permanent home and a second chance at the happy life she always deserved.

“As an organisation that almost wholly relies on donations to do its life-saving work, transformations like the one Karma underwent are only possible thanks to the generosity of South Australian animal lovers,” RSPCA SA CEO Marcus Gehrig said.
“This day is timed to bring in vital funds ahead of our busiest time of the year, so we really hope our community will again rally to support our work in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals who desperately need our help.”
In 2023, more than 2,600 animal lovers turned out in support of Give To Get Them Home and raised over $400,000 for animals in need – a record for the charity and one RSPCA SA hopes to achieve again this year.
The appeal is taking place the day before World Animal Day, created in 1925 by Heinrich Zimmermann, an animal-loving writer from Germany. World Animal Day aims to raise awareness about how animals are treated around the world and encourage people to give a voice to animals.
“This year’s theme for World Animal Day is ‘The world is their home too’, which is a timely reminder of the hundreds of homeless animals in South Australia who need our help,” Gehrig said.
“Every day is World Animal Day for RSPCA SA, as our teams strive to help as many animals as possible get ready to find loving homes.”
There are currently over 500 animals in RSPCA SA’s care, and more than half of those are being housed at the charity’s recently opened animal care centre at O’Halloran Hill.
“Everyone who donates on Thursday 3 October will instantly see their donation doubled and should feel proud to be supporting life-saving veterinary care and behavioural support for animals, in addition to the microchipping, vaccinations and desexing that all our animals undergo before finding loving new homes,” Gehrig said.
“You literally will be giving to get animals into homes.”
