SkyCity signature outlets manager Jimmy Parham said it was an unrealised idea for a Tasting Australia event that provided the genesis for the Culinary Excursion.

“We have these amazingly talented chefs and these beautiful venues, in a precinct that quite a few people still haven’t explored,” Parham said.

The dinner takes in Madame Hanoi, The Kitchen, iTL and Sôl Rooftop, with each stop allowing guests to savour a dish from the signature restaurant.

Parham said it makes for an unforgettable evening.

“This one is a first for SkyCity, the Culinary Excursion is really aimed at redefining dining,” he said.

“Nowhere else in Adelaide can guests dine at four award-winning restaurants as part of one integrated experience.

“It’s a way to celebrate our chefs and venues, and also give people a guided walking tour of the historic heritage building through to the new Eos by SkyCity glittering gold tower next to us.”

The night kicks off at multi-award-winning French-Vietnamese restaurant Madame Hanoi, known for its bold flavours, before moving on to The Kitchen where local produce shines in their ‘elevated classics and hot new takes’.

Parham said the food and drinks offering at every stage is bound to impress.

“Whether you’re a local foodie or a visitor looking for a taste of Adelaide’s finest food and drinks, this promises to be an exceptional evening of exploration,” he said.

“Both Madame Hanoi and Sôl have great bars and do great cocktails, and we’ve got head chef Sean Thomas in Madame Hanoi, who is a powerhouse.

“Kel Delaney in The Kitchen has an amazing and storied career, including at Augé back in the day. She has such a keen sense of flavour and how to construct a dish and really knows how to elevate the food.”

Next on the Culinary Excursion is iTL where lead chef Nico Pulera focuses on seasonal local ingredients to deliver uncomplicated and contemporary Italian dining.

The evening ends with suitably celebratory and spectacular views at Sôl Rooftop where head chef Raj Kumar has brought a modern Australian spin to haute cuisine.

Each course is accompanied by an offering of matching beverages.

“The feedback from guests so far has been that it’s exceptional value,” Parham said.

At the moment, Sôl Rooftop is doing a collaboration with Penfolds to launch their new non-vintage Champagne Cuvée Brut.

For the Culinary Excursion, their mixologists will be serving up a Penfolds sour, a twist on the classic New York sour, and a Penfolds spritz, adding surprising notes to the Champagne with elderberry and a mandarin liqueur.

The team behind the Culinary Excursion has been “blown away by the initial demand” said Parham, with the first two dates on offer immediately booked out.

The format has also proven to be a winner in terms of the groups of guests mingling and chatting with each other. Parham said the mood is “celebratory, convivial and very social”.

Guests are guided between the venues and welcomed at each one by a key member of the restaurant’s team, either the head chef, venue manager or front of house leader.

“We’ve built an overarching experience for everybody, so you get fully embraced by the SkyCity team and walk away knowing a little bit more about the site’s history, the chefs and the food at each stop.”

The concept lends itself to repeat visitation – not only because it offers a unique food experience to share with friends, family and interstate guests, but also as the menu focuses on seasonal produce and changes regularly.

“If you’ve done it six months ago and came back, it would be different dishes and a whole new experience,” Parham said.

Each restaurant offers a different décor and vibe: Madame Hanoi with its mezzanine dining and double-height wall mural; the intimate attic area of The Kitchen with dark wood and a New York brasserie feel; iTL with a communal table in the heart of the action watching the pizza chefs work their magic; and Sôl Rooftop where the comfy booths enjoy views across to Adelaide Oval.

There is also an elevated level of old school hospitality that ensures the night is special.

Parham reaches out to guests before each Culinary Excursion to learn about any birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions and more, so the front of house teams can “lean into and tailor the experience”.

He is understandably enthusiastic about the offering, which brings a new and unique experience for restaurant goers.

“It’s very much that old school progressive dinner concept where you’re bringing people together and everybody’s setting out on a shared journey.

“We want people to share stories and to laugh and to really build that sociability into the experience.”
