SAHMRI’s ‘grate’ decade of health
At its landmark HQ known as the “cheesegrater”, SAHMRI is celebrating 10 years of profound contribution to global health and wellbeing through pioneering research and ground-breaking discoveries.
Established in 2013, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) drives health and medical research advancements, encouraging researchers, clinicians and healthcare providers to collaborate.
These dynamic collaborations extend beyond SAHMRI, connecting with other leading research organisations across Australia and the globe.
SAHMRI is an independent not-for-profit searching for solutions to medical conditions that cause human suffering to find better ways to treat, heal and care for people.
There is a dedicated team of 700+ researchers working in four main areas: investigating why people respond differently to different cancers and therapies; improving the health and wellbeing of women and families, ensuring that all children can reach their full potential; tackling the enormous health challenges and chronic diseases that affect us as we age; and reducing inequity in health and wellbeing among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
A distinctive feature is its unwavering commitment to translating research findings into real-world applications with tangible benefits such as life-saving drugs, evidence-based healthcare policies and improved clinical practices.
SAHMRI will celebrate its tenth year with a free open day on Sunday, November 26 from 10am
The institute’s world-class facilities, housed within its iconic building, boast state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the latest technology. These facilities attract some of the world’s foremost scientists, who contribute to cutting-edge research and mentor future generations, ensuring that SAHMRI remains a leader in medical research.
Recognising the importance of community engagement and education, SAHMRI has organised numerous public events, workshops and educational programs over the years, fostering a deep connection between the institute and the broader community.
