With Arrium this morning confirming the loss of a further 250 Whyalla jobs and Alinta set to shut down operations in Leigh Creek, the Liberals have called on the Weatherill Government to spend money to safeguard employment.

“These conditions call for an emergency response, and that’s what we’re proposing – an emergency stimulus plan,” Opposition Leader Steven Marshall told InDaily.

“We’re getting more and more bad announcements on a daily basis, and the Government hasn’t come up with anything to create stimulus.”

A policy document outlined today details several proposals the Liberals have announced previously, which they say would total around $480 million over the forward estimates.

They include extending a payroll tax rebate for small business and early implementation of previously-announced stamp duty cuts, along with infrastructure spending on irrigation in northern Adelaide and black spot programs statewide.

The Liberals have also called for the reintroduction of Labor’s abolished remission on Emergency Services Levy bills and a review on water pricing.

“We would like to see the Government implement this prior to Christmas, to create some stimulus,” said Marshall.

“We don’t believe we should be sitting on our hands.”
