Gather Round driving offences data released

Police have released the results of statewide road and traffic operations during the AFL Gather Round.

The operation from April 3 to 7 included high visibility policing and education strategies to reduce collisions.

Three lives were lost on the Eyre Highway in a truck collision during the operation, while there were 15 serious injuries resulting from other accidents.

Police said 49 people were found driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, while 60 drivers were detected drug driving.

Over 900 speeding offences were recorded, as well as 28 seatbelt offences and 93 instances of drivers using their mobile phones.

Throughout the Gather Round operation 358 dangerous driving offences were detected by police, including the misuse of a vehicle and failure to comply with signage.

Over the four days 97 vehicles were impounded and 71 drivers issued with an immediate loss of licence.

Superintendent Darren Fielke, who is the officer in charge for the traffic services branch said overall he was “pleased with the driving behaviours of those attending the Gather Round games and festivities”.
