Illegal calamari fishing has cost a South Australian man almost $6000.

The man pleaded guilty to taking six times the Southern Calamari limit at Wallaroo, on Yorke Peninsula, in January, Primary Industries SA says.

He avoided a potential two-year jail term but was fined $5900.

PIRSA says the man, from Wallaroo, was found with 91 Southern Calamari – well above the daily bag limit of 15.

His illegal catch was discovered during an inspection of his catch near the Wallaroo boat ramp by SA Police, who are also authorised as fisheries officers.

As well as a fine, the man had to forfeit the calamari and his fishing gear.
