Adelaide University names deputy vice-chancellors

Eight deputy vice-chancellors have been appointed to Adelaide University ahead of its opening in 2026.

Adelaide University co-vice chancellors, Professor Peter Høj and Professor David Lloyd, today named senior appointments to the new institution formed by a merger between the universities of Adelaide and South Australia.

The eight people selected following a recruitment process by Boyden Australia are:

  • Deputy vice chancellor academic: Professor John Williams
  • Deputy vice chancellor corporate: Paul Beard
  • Deputy vice chancellor Indigenous: Professor Steve Larkin
  • Deputy vice chancellor international and external engagement: Professor Jessica Gallagher
  • Deputy vice chancellor people and culture: Paula Ward
  • Deputy vice chancellor research and innovation: Professor Anton Middelberg
  • Deputy vice chancellor experience and success: Tom Steer
  • Provost and deputy vice chancellor: Professor Joanne Cys

“We congratulate our newly appointed colleagues who we know will provide the vision, expertise and guidance in realising our collective ambitions for a new university for the future,” Lloyd and Høj said in a joint statement.

“This leadership group have a tremendous depth of talent and we very much look forward to continuing our important work in creating a world-class contemporary and comprehensive institution and member of Australia’s prestigious and research-intensive Group of Eight.”

The appointees will begin their roles on October 1.

Adelaide University international student applications are now open and research degrees will be open for application in early 2025, ahead of the new institution’s opening in January 2026.

Local student applications and acceptances for coursework programs will open in August 2025 ahead of the 2026 academic year.
