Thousands without power after wild weather

More than 3000 properties remain blacked out across the Adelaide Hills, northern suburbs and South East after trees were felled and powerlines downed by strong winds lashing the state.

As of 12:30 Monday, SA Power Networks reports 41 power currant outages across the state with 3416 customers affected.

More than 600 properties were blacked out around Kingston South East, but power was restored mid-morning.

However, more than 500 properties around Gumeracha and Kenton Valley in the Adelaide Hills remain without power, along with more than 200 around Ashbourne, plus hundreds more around Mt Gambier and the South East, with other pockets of outages throughout the Hills, northern suburbs and Kangaroo Island.

The State Emergency Service said at midday on Monday that it has recorded 192 taskings as of midnight Sunday – up from the 177 listed at 10:30am.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind speed highs of 107 km/h at Cape Jaffa and 105km/h at Mount Crawford at around midnight, with speeds of 103km/h at Mount Gambier at 10:21 pm.

The Bureau issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds around the state, to lower South-East regions.

People in the Mount Lofty Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Upper and Lower South East, parts of the Yorke Peninsula, Mid North and Murraylands districts have all been issued a warning.

The Bureau said a “vigorous westerly airstream” over the state is expected to ease gradually over the morning, with a warning for strong southwesterly winds early this morning.

“Damaging wind gusts around 90 to 100km/h are likely over the warning area early Monday morning, particularly with passing showers or thunderstorms. The risk of damaging wind gusts will contract to the Lower Southeast by the late morning then ease during the afternoon,” it said.
