Police said the Mount Gambier man was arrested on Tuesday over Sunday’s three-car crash near Nangwarry on the Riddoch Highway, hours after it was announced that a girl critically injured in the accident had died overnight.
She and a five-year-old boy who died at the scene had been passengers in a Toyota hit by a Nissan ute.
The crash was sparked when a Holden hit an emu on the highway, with the Toyota braking to avoid a collision but then hit by the Nissan.
The 42-year-old Toyota driver, a 46-year-old woman, 13-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, all from Mount Gambier, were taken to hospital.
The Nissan driver was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and four counts of causing harm by dangerous driving. He was refused bail and will appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
