Cross Road reopens after truck crash

UPDATED: Cross Rd has reopened to traffic in both directions after an out-of-control truck crashed into a wall at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway this morning – the third truck smash at that location in 10 years.

Cross Rd was closed from Fullarton Rd to the four-way intersection below the freeway just before 4am.

A concrete pumping truck lost control as it came down the freeway, drove into Cross Rd and into the opposite lanes before smashing into a wall near the fountain at the Glen Osmond Rd corner and rolling over.

The 65-year-old driver from Millicent was seriously injured.

The South Eastern Freeway and Glen Osmond Rd remained open with speed restrictions following the incident but Cross Rd was completely blocked to traffic from the freeway, Portrush and Glen Osmond roads during the morning peak.

Police said the wall hit by the truck was unstable after the collision and would need  reinforcement before the truck was removed and the road cleared.

The Cross Rd downtrack heading west opened late this morning and the eastern uptrack from Fullarton Rd was reopened just before 2pm.

It’s the latest truck to lose control coming down the steep incline of the SE Freeway and crashing at the top of Cross Rd at the major four-way intersection – a notorious accident blackspot.

In July 2022, nine people were injured after a truck hit cars and a bus at the site, while in 2014 two people were killed others critically injured after a sewage truck lost its brakes and ploughed into traffic waiting at the lights.
