Adelaide City Council said cleaning work on the four-metre-tall stainless-steel structure is expected to be completed on September 20.

“The Spheres are regularly cleaned throughout the year but this is the first time they have been given a deep clean since 2014,” a spokesperson said.

“The work will involve a mix of gentle chemical treatment and polishing.

“The chemicals used are odourless and biodegradable.”

Temporary fencing has been erected for occupational health and safety reasons, the spokesperson said, so the contractors can reach an elevated working platform.

In 2014, the Balls were taken out of Rundle Mall for six months of cleaning.

When they returned, they were moved three metres to the northern side of the Mall to create a clear central path through the shopping strip.

The Spheres were designed by Vienna-born Australian artist Bert Flugelman and gifted by the Hindmarsh Building Society in 1977.
