Police said the truck and train collided at about 10.20am this morning near Petersen Road, Middleton.

The impact turned the truck on its side, spilling its load of soil and leaking diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid.

The SA Country Fire Service said the train was carrying 15 passengers and had derailed on impact.

All passengers and the driver are now safely off the train, the CFS said, with the SA Ambulance Service “attending to some occupants, including the train driver, who have sustained minor injuries”.

Police said the truck driver had not been charged with an offence but was fined just over $600 for failing to give way.

Petersen Road was closed to traffic while emergency services worked to clear the scene but has since reopened.

In July last year, a car hit a Steamranger with 115 passengers at a Port Elliot level crossing.
