Test give and take under new Adelaide Oval deal

Adelaide Oval has only been given a day Test against the West Indies for the upcoming summer of cricket but is expected to host bumper day-night fixtures against India and England in the following two seasons.

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) today announced a new three-year scheduling agreement with Cricket Australia (CA) locking in fixtures for the ’23/24, ’24/25 and ’25/26 cricket seasons.

SACA says the deal will ensure the South Australian cricketing public “will not be taken for granted in future scheduling decisions”.

Under the agreement, Adelaide Oval will host a day Test between Australia and the West Indies in the upcoming summer of cricket.

The fixture, scheduled for January 17 to 21, marks only the second time South Australia has not been given a day-night Test since the concept made its world debut at Adelaide Oval in 2015.

However, the new scheduling deal will see the Adelaide Oval play host to India in December ‘24/25 and England in December ‘25/26.

SACA confirmed it expects those two fixtures to be day-night Tests.

Adelaide Oval will also host a men’s T20 match between Australia and the West Indies on February 11 and a women’s One Day International between Australia and South Africa on February 3.

Despite the bumper fixtures in ’24/25 and ’25/26, Adelaide is poised to walk away from this year’s international fixture as the biggest loser of the five major capital cities – missing out on preferred opponents Pakistan.

Perth will host the opening Test of the summer against Pakistan, who will also play in Melbourne and Sydney over Christmas and New Year before the West Indies’ arrival.

Brisbane will join Adelaide in hosting the West Indies, but the Queensland fixture will be a day-night Test aimed at enticing crowds against a weaker opponent.

There remains a desire from SACA to earn marquee matches, after earlier this year pushing to claim the New Year’s Test from Sydney.

Under a new initiative to be soon laid out by Cricket Australia, a clearer window of fixtures will be delivered to states seasons in advance.

While exact dates will not be announced, it will allow states to begin promotions for tourists years in advance with knowledge of the visiting team and what period it will be played in.

Part of that initiative will also include a transparent process for why Tests are awarded to each city, showcasing what each state can offer financially and through other means.

SACA expects the arrangements to provide certainty over the scheduling of the Adelaide Oval test until 2031.

“We are pleased that CA has listened to SACA’s concerns about the process for the allocation of Test Match cricket in Australia,” SACA president Will Rayner said in a statement.

“CA has committed to a process that recognises the value, support and contribution created by SACA members and the broader South Australian cricketing public, and ensures it will not be taken for granted in future scheduling decisions.”

SACA CEO Charlie Hodgson said the association “put forward several long-term scheduling options” to CA during its negotiations which “would have created significant new revenues for the good of the game at all levels”.

“We look forward to developing these further with CA over the coming months to ensure our members continue to see the greatest cricketers in the world play at the world’s finest cricket ground,” he said.

Adelaide Oval hosted the West Indies last summer, with Australia thrashing the unfancied side by 419 runs in just over three days.
