The body was discovered by a worker clearing long grass on the property at Cheviot Road just before 2pm yesterday.
It is not known how long the body had been on the property.
Due to the decomposed nature of the remains, the identity of the deceased will need forensic testing and has not yet been confirmed.
“The remains are in such a state of decomposition that at this stage we cannot tell the sex or the age of the deceased and we don’t know how long the deceased has been in this location,” said Detective Inspector Brett Featherby, Major Crime Investigation.
Grass on the block had grown to about a metre and a half high since it was last mowed in March.
“We do know from the worker that we’ve spoken to that there are some items including the decomposed body that weren’t present in March of this year,” Featherby said.
“The circumstances surrounding the location of the deceased are suspicious.”
Police have begun examining CCTV vision of the block looking for clues and have appealed to the public for help.
“Any members of the public who have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the vicinity of the vacant block on Cheviot Road, Salisbury South in recent months is asked to please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
