As assessment panel representing the South Australian business community judged hundreds of nominees, whittling them down to 40 who not only stand out for their personal determination and commercial drive, but also their philanthropic pursuits.
The final 40 (scroll down for the full list) were announced at a packed awards dinner at the National Wine Centre last night, where they were welcomed by the state’s Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, Planning and Local Government, Stephan Knoll – himself well under 40.
The list includes a hugely varied collection of South Australian talents, who are making a mark in fields such as health, technology, the media, property, social innovation, agriculture, finance, the law, and much more.
The chair of the judging panel, Deloitte’s Ashley Hunter, said the judges agreed on two broad categories for choosing the winners: impact on the business and community, and disruption.
“It became clear to us early on that simply being good at your job wasn’t going to be enough,” he said. “We were really looking for candidates that went above and beyond the norm; candidates that pushed the boundaries; candidates that challenged the status quo.”
From 500 nominations came 169 formal applications, which were then reduced to a shortlist of 62.
Paul Hamra, managing director of InDaily publisher Solstice Media, said 40 Under 40 was designed to promote the upcoming generation of South Australian leaders.
“We designed these awards to uncover the untold stories of success in our community – to go beyond the well-worn narratives about South Australia’s business community,” he said.
“I think we’ve succeeded: the 40 Under 40 includes the young leaders who will not only advance the state’s economy into the future, but who have also shown that they will help shape our community for many years to come. It’s an inspiring and intelligent group.”
The awards also recognised four individuals:

State Contribution Award – presented by KWP! – awarded to Carmen Garcia from Community Corporate
