Level three of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital will include 300 bike parking spaces.

The new Royal Adelaide Hospital’s final floor plans have been released today, confirming that it will feature 100% single rooms for patients and also revealing 300 bicycle parking spaces.

Emergency patients admitted to the hospital will be able to bypass the emergency department and access specific health services through multiple department entry ways.

Patients suffering a heart attack, for example, will be able to  access the Cardiology Service directly, rather than presenting at ED.

Project lead for the new RAH Dr David Panter said the design would minimise emergency room wait times.

“Admitting patients directly into the service they require will mean that up to 50 per cent of emergency patients who need to be admitted into hospital will be able to bypass the ED, helping to cut waiting times and reduce pressure on the system,” he said.

“Ensuring we are putting the patient first and making their experience as positive as possible  has been a key focus in the design of the new hospital.”

Health Minister Jack Snelling said that given federal government cuts to the state health budget, the hospital would have to be as efficient as possible.

“The new RAH will be the most advanced hospital in Australia,” he said.

“More than 80 clinical and non-clinical planning groups have worked hard over the past three years to develop and review the internal design.

“We are confident that the significant planning we have undertaken will ensure the South Australian community will have access to modern, flexible and high quality care well into the future.”

Snelling will tonight fly out to visit hospitals in Stockholm, Oslo, Trondheim and London with similarities to the new RAH.

“This is the state’s biggest infrastructure project; we can’t afford to get this wrong and we need to learn from other countries that have gone through the same process,” he said.
