Winter wine vibes, dinner by the beach, cheese aplenty

Upcoming food and drink happenings in SA, including this weekend’s Cellar Door Fest Winter Edit, the Cheese-A-Holics festival, a Caribbean street food night, and a Producers Plate long-table dinner at Port Willunga’s Star of Greece.

 Cellar Door Fest Winter Edit – July 19-20

A boutique take on the Adelaide Convention Centre’s annual Cellar Door Fest, this new event will take place over two days – from 5pm-10pm on Friday and midday until 8pm on Saturday. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy wine from all SA’s top winemaking regions (full list here), plus beer and craft spirits, all in a “cosy, boho festival setting”. There will also be live music throughout the weekend (this CityMag story has the line-up of artists). Tickets for the Winter Edit range from $28 (Friday night general admission) to $60 for a two-day pass.

Christmas in July at Mt Lofty House – July 20

Mount Lofty House restaurant Hardy’s Verandah is bringing out the Christmas tree, mulled wine and bon-bons for a four-course Christmas in July dinner. The menu includes cured salmon, slow-cooked smoked pork tenderloin, roast turkey with a sage and pistachio stuffing, and spiced fig and date pudding. A three-hour drinks package is included in the $119pp price, and vegetarian and vegan options are available on request. More event details here.

Cheese-A-Holics Cheese Festival – July 21

Derby Pavilion at Morphettville Racecourse will be the venue for this cheese showcase featuring dairy delights from more than 25 producers, as well as vegan cheeses, olives, condiments, food vans, wines, craft beer and gin. The event, running from 10am-5pm, will also feature ticketed masterclasses, including one on cocktail and cheese pairing (with cocktails by Never Never Distilling) and another presented in conjunction with Big Shed Brewing that looks at winning beer and cheese combinations. Hentley Farm Winter Wine Dinner – July 26

Hosted by the Stamford Grand Adelaide at Glenelg, this five-course $99pp shared dinner will feature wines from Barossa winemaker Hentley Farm paired with dishes by hotel executive chef Darren Greenwood. Courses will include McLaren Vale camembert baked with pecans, rosemary and olive oil toasts; chicken roulade with butternut pumpkin puree and caramelised onion; and slow-braised beef cheeks with black pepper, red wine, and soft polenta (full menu and bookings here). Hentley Farm owner and founder Keith Hentschke will also be on hand to discuss the winemaking process and how different varietals are paired with food.

Winter Reds – July 26-28

More than 30 Adelaide Hills wineries will be presenting events during this year’s Winter Reds festival, from fireside feasts and long lunches to degustation dinners. Ticketed highlights include Penfolds’ 175th anniversary Winter Reds and Truffle Dinner at Magill Estate Restaurant ($175); Pinot in the Dark, a four-course dinner matched with eight consecutive vintages of Pinot Noir at Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard ($165); a five-course Feast & Fire in the Field at Ngeringa Winery with Michelin-starred chef Andrew Wandless ($120); and Little Nepal, a guided walk through Kuitpo Forest followed by a Nepalese lunch at Fox Gordon cellar door ($125). 2K Sundays Winter Brunch – July 28

2KW Bar & Restaurant is hosting the second event in its Winter Brunch series next weekend, with a two-hour bottomless brunch that will immerse guests in the flavours of Spain with “the spice of chorizo, acidity of an escabeche and the aromatics of sofrito”. The $75 brunch begins at 11am, and there will also be sparkling wine, bellinis, sangria and Bloody Marys courtesy of Bird In Hand Winery and Grey Goose Vodka.

Mismatch IPA Day in the West End – August 1

Mismatch Brewing Company has teamed up with West End bars – including Maybe Mae, Cry Baby, Hains & Co, Bank Street Social, Clever Little Tailor, Udaberri and more – to celebrate International IPA Day on August 1. The brewer has collaborated with each bar to create a limited-release IPA which will be launched at their venues on the night, with part proceeds from “Karma Kegs” to be donated to charity. Star of Greece restaurant at Port Willunga has teamed up with Toast the Locals to present a long-table dinner which promises to serve up the best artisan produce from the Fleurieu Peninsula. The evening will begin with a drink and canapé on arrival, and a chance to talk with local producers, followed by a four-course menu featuring shared platters paired with Fleurieu wines. Tickets for The Producers Plate Dinner are $149, or $199 including bus transport from Victoria Square in the CBD.

Caribbean Street Food Night – August 8

La Boca Bar and Grill on North Terrace is spicing up winter with an event featuring Caribbean street food, house-made Bacardi rum cocktails and salsa music. The menu will include dishes such as Puerto Rican plantain balls; Cuban shredded beef with tomato, black beans, yellow rice, plantains and fried yuca; and deep-fried crab fritters. Langhorne Creek Cellar Treasures Weekend – August 10-11

Lake Breeze Wines is hosting a four-course lunch and tasting on August 2.

Wineries throughout Langhorne Creek will be offering tastings of their rare and museum wines as well as current vintages during the Cellar Treasures Weekend. Experiences on offer include a Back Vintage Bonfire & Paella in the Vineyard at Karrawatta, Chocolate and Wine Pairing at Vineyard Road, and an Organic Tasting at Temple Bruer. Lake Breeze is also hosting a $99 four-course lunch and tasting with winemaker Greg Follett on August 2, the Friday before the Cellar Treasures weekend. See the full program here.

Pinot Palooza – August 10

More than 100 wines from 30 Pinot producers from Australia, New Zealand and beyond will be available for tasting when Pinot Palooza comes to the Flour Shed at Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide. It’s on from midday until 5pm, with a bar, tunes and the promise of a “massive food line-up”.

Sprout Regional Reds – August 10

Sprout Cooking School will take guests on a journey through the McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and Adelaide Hills, with premium Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir matched to a four-course menu specifically designed to showcase the region, the vineyard and the complexity of each wine. Featured wineries at the dinner will include Shaw and Smith, Hither and Yon, Coriole, Henschke and Petaluma (see the full list here) and tickets are $180pp.
