Upcoming food and drink happenings in SA, including this weekend’s Beer & BBQ Festival, a plant-based twilight event at Plant 4, Bastille Day celebrations, Christmas in July at Mt Lofty House and an intimate Mexican dinner party.

 Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival – July 12-14

Returning to Adelaide Showground this weekend, Beer & BBQ Festival will feature a huge line-up of Australian brewers and cider makers, as well as wine, gin, bourbon and even alcoholic kombucha, plus more barbecue than you can shake a tong at (including options for vegetarians and vegans). There will also be an expanded live music offering including Frenzal Rhomb and The Majesty of Tap (presented by You Am I). CityMag offers a taste of what’s in store here, and also previews six one-off collaboration beers that will make their debut at the festival. You’ll find the full beer, barbecue and beats program on the official Beer & BBQ website, with session tickets ($30 – $45) and season passes ($85) available.

Masterclass – Not the Shiraz Your Dad Drinks – July 13

Hills winery Vinterloper is hosting the first of a planned series of masterclasses at its Lot 100 home at Nairne, promising to dust off some limited back-vintage Shiraz to show its winemaking evolution. The cheekily named event, from 1-2pm, will see tasting flights accompanied by antipasto platters and house-baked sourdough, with tickets (here) costing $55.

Plant Based at Plant 4 – July 13

Plant 4 Bowden is hosting another twilight vegan event from 5pm-10pm this Saturday. Expect plant-based eateries, craft beer, SA wine, cocktails featuring local spirits, handmade shopping stalls, children’s activities upstairs and a DJ. Entry for Plant Based at Plant 4 is free.

Bastille Day Brunch ­– July 14

National Wine Centre executive chef Steven Clark and head sommelier James Boden will be showcasing French food and wine varietals at this Bastille Day brunch. The three-course menu will include croissants and Danishes, cured meats, bisque custard, beef bourguignon, and a selection of French cheeses, while the featured wines will range from Champagne to Pinot Blanc, Grenache Cinsault Shiraz and Gamay. There will also be live music by local musicians Mélange à Trois. All-inclusive tickets (available here) are $85pp.

Bastille Day at the Central Market – July 12-13

Adelaide Central Market is hosting two days of French festivities to celebrate Bastille Day, with a pop-up crepe bar by the Market Bread Bar, cooking demonstrations, a champagne bar, live music and children’s activities. Jamface Central’s French Crunch Club will return, with a ticketed Parisian four-course menu cooked by Poh Ling Yeow, and other market stallholders will be showcasing French fare such as terrine, fresh truffles, escargot, eclairs, croissants and cheeses. Pisco Sangria Party at Cumbia – July 18

Also taking place in the Central Market is this one-off celebration of Latin American food and culture being presented by Cumbia Bar & Restaurant. The evening event will feature a selection of tapas from Peru, Colombia and Brazil, as well as sangria and live music, with tickets for the Pisco Sangria Party costing $48 each.

Winter Red Wine Masterclass Series – July 18 & August 16

The South Australian Wine Industry Association is hosting a short series of masterclasses over winter, with the next event (on July 18) promising to enlighten participants about the world of Cabernets through a guided tasting of eight Cabernet blends. It will be followed by a Grenache masterclass on August 16. Costing $79 each, the sessions will feature a guest winemaker and be held at the National Wine Centre. Details and bookings here.

Cellar Door Fest Winter Edit – July 19-20

A boutique take on the Adelaide Convention Centre’s annual Cellar Door Fest, this new event will take place over two days – from 5pm-10pm on the Friday and midday until 8pm on Saturday. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy wine from all SA’s top winemaking regions (see the full list here), plus beer and craft spirits, all in a “cosy, boho festival setting”. There will also be live music throughout the weekend. Tickets range from $28 (Friday night general admission) to $60 for a two-day pass.

Christmas in July at Mt Lofty House – July 20

Mount Lofty House restaurant Hardy’s Verandah is bringing out the Christmas tree, mulled wine and bon-bons for a four-course Christmas in July dinner. The menu includes cured salmon, slow-cooked smoked pork tenderloin, roast turkey with a sage and pistachio stuffing, and spiced fig and date pudding. A three-hour drinks package is included in the $119pp price, and vegetarian and vegan options are available on request. More event details here.

Cheese-A-Holics Cheese Festival – July 21

Derby Pavilion at Morphettville Racecourse will be the venue for this cheese showcase featuring dairy delights from more than 25 producers, as well as vegan cheeses, olives, condiments, food vans, wines, craft beer and gin. The event, running from 10am-5pm, will also feature ticketed masterclasses, including one on cocktail and cheese pairing (with cocktails by Never Never Distilling) and another presented in conjunction with Big Shed Brewing that looks at winning beer and cheese combinations. Winter Reds – July 26-28

Winter Reds at Mt Lofty Ranges.

More than 30 Adelaide Hills wineries will be presenting events during this year’s Winter Reds festival, from fireside feasts and long lunches to degustation dinners. Ticketed highlights include Penfolds’ 175th anniversary Winter Reds and Truffle Dinner at Magill Estate Restaurant ($175); Pinot in the Dark, a four-course dinner matched with eight consecutive vintages of Pinot Noir at Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard ($165); a five-course Feast & Fire in the Field at Ngeringa Winery with Michelin-starred chef Andrew Wandless ($120); and Little Nepal, a guided walk through Kuitpo Forest followed by a Nepalese lunch at Fox Gordon cellar door ($125). Mexican Dinner Party – July 28

Mi Mero Mole is serving up another traditional Mexican dining experience at La Popular Taqueria in Port Adelaide. Its intimate dinner parties – originally hosted at Mexican-born cook Daniella Guevara’s own home before she opened her taqueria – are a popular, semi-regular occurrence, with only around 20 diners and a five or six-course menu that promises vibrant Mexican flavours. Tickets (here) are $88 plus booking fee.

Mismatch IPA Day in the West End – August 1

Mismatch Brewing Company has teamed up with West End bars – including Maybe Mae, Cry Baby, Hains & Co, Bank Street Social, Clever Little Tailor, Udaberri and more – to celebrate International IPA Day on August 1. The brewer has collaborated with each bar to create a limited-release IPA which will be launched at their venues on the night, with part proceeds from “Karma Kegs” to be donated to charity. Pinot Palooza – August 10

More than 100 wines from 30 Pinot producers from Australia, New Zealand and beyond will be available for tasting when Pinot Palooza comes to the Flour Shed at Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide. It’s on from midday until 5pm, with a bar, tunes and the promise of a “massive food line-up”.
