On Saturday, Flinders University will hold an event in Adelaide to celebrate the unveiling of a bronze statue of Matthew Flinders and his cat Trim at Euston station in London.

Matthew Flinders, one of Australia’s best known explorers and namesake of Flinders University, will be honoured at parallel ceremonies in London and Adelaide this week.

To mark the occasion of Flinders and his cat Trim – Flinders University’s unofficial mascot –being immortalised in bronze at London’s Euston Station, Flinders is bringing together some of his direct descendants to celebrate.

The bronze statue, which will be unveiled by Prince William, marks the bicentenary of Flinders’ passing and the publication of his influential A Voyage to Terra Australis.

On Saturday, from 3.30pm, Flinders University will screen footage of the unveiling from Euston Station, where Matthew Flinders is believed to be buried under platform four or five.

The Flinders event, which will be held at Flinders University, Victoria Square, will have artwork on display from the Flinders University Art Museum. Fiona Salmon, who is Director of the Museum and a direct descendant of Matthew Flinders, will also be attending.
