South Australian regional stories provide an insight into the beauty of rural Australia, showing the wealth of human kindness, community strength and resilience.

The South Australian Regional Showcase Awards collate the 20 best news stories that reflect positive impact and outreach to a wider audience.

The showcase also aims to build up local businesses, highlighting the innovations in research and design made across a wide range of fields.

Narrowed down from 150 stories published since November 2023, the top 20 stories have strengths that have connected with the public and the panel alike.

InDaily Editorial Director Jim Plouffe said covering issues outside Adelaide is very important.

“At InDaily we strive to bring readers inside the issues important to the state,” he said.

“And an added bonus is we also get to report on the amazing people and community groups that make country South Australia such an incredible place.”

The five selected categories for the showcase, as judged by the InDaily Regional Showcase partners, are: Regional Resilience, Meaningful Connections, Business Innovation, Community Empowerment and Lifelong Learning.

The general public and program stakeholders vote on their favourite story from the selection, contributing to the result of the People’s Choice Award.

The People’s Choice winner for 2023 was Barn owls join fight against Kangaroo Island pests, covering the integration of owls as a method of pest eradication.

From outback locals solving childcare staffing shortages to heroic fence fixers in Mypolonga, the state’s regions have seen their share of uplifting stories.

“More and more we hear that ‘times are tough’ in Adelaide and across the nation, but we at InDaily recognise that times are always tough in agricultural and regional communities around the state,” Plouffe said.

The regions continuously battle a “lack of housing, workers, development, health care” and battering weather, Plouffe said, but the people living in these areas always prevail.

“In a world filled with bad news, it’s important we present some good news as well,” he said.

Some stories are found from tips made by the public and grow into something that can create positive change in the SA regions.

InDaily has always been about giving the reader the inside scoop on the state we call home,” Plouffe said.

“We do this in many ways – our team of reporters works extra hard each day to find and report the news – but we also rely on the public to give us a call, drop us an email or DM our socials with tips on potential stories.”

“This is even more important from the regions because we don’t have the resources to be in every community, so send us your news so we can cover the state from top to bottom.”

The voting closes on 30 September at 11:59pm.
