Burnside Hospital this week lodged a development application with Burnside Council for a $65 million expansion of its Kensington Road site.
To be located next to the existing hospital and linked by a footbridge, the three-storey Health Precinct if approved will increase the centre’s chemotherapy treatment services by 33 per cent.
It will also add a linear accelerator – used in the radiation treatment of cancer patients – to the hospital’s facilities.
Two new operating theatres will be built to meet the demand for day surgeries. Once up and running, Burnside Hospital said its new theatres will be able to cater for up to 3500 additional patient procedures per year.

The new building, on land already owned by Burnside Hospital and zoned for healthcare, will also house a fertility service, and several medical specialists will relocate from the existing hospital grounds into larger rooms in the new building.
It will sit on two parcels of land at 126 Kensington Road and 2 Moore Street, Toorak Gardens, currently used as a car park.

Plans also include three levels of underground parking for up to 200 cars.
The development will support 200 jobs during construction and more than 70 professional healthcare and support roles when completed, according to Burnside Hospital.
The expansion plans follow the hospital’s acquisition of Sportsmed Hospital at Stepney to create Burnside Hospital Stepney – a wholly-owned subsidiary.
That deal was completed in September 2023 and effectively doubled the company’s capabilities – growing from five operating theatres to 10, and from 76 beds to 125.

CEO Alan Morrison said the latest development would meet the future healthcare needs of the local community.
“There is a nationwide financial crisis impacting private hospitals, and communities get hurt when their local hospitals have to cut back services or close their doors,” he said.
“We’re determined that won’t happen to Burnside Hospital. It’s why we acquired the Sportsmed Hospital business last year to create Burnside Hospital Stepney, and it’s why we’re creating our new Health Precinct on our Godfree House site.
“With the range of services it will provide – including two new operating theatres and a procedure room, specialist consulting rooms, radiology, cancer treatment, pathology and a new fertility clinic – we will be meeting the growing demand for quality healthcare in Adelaide’s east and underscoring our ability to care for our community for decades to come.”

A formal consultation period will now begin after the development application was lodged yesterday.
The new development is being designed and constructed by health infrastructure specialists Cambridge Medical Property.
First patients will likely be welcomed in early 2027 following 18-24 months of construction.
