Carmen Matteo SC has been appointed to the South Australian District Court and will commence on the bench from 30 October.

Her appointment follows more than two decades at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) where she was appointed as Senior Counsel last year.

Matteo’s legal career began as an associate to Supreme Court judge Ted Mullighan, after which she worked as a solicitor with the Legal Services Commission.

The new appointee worked on numerous high-profile and complex matters during her time with the ODPP, including the prosecution of Matthew Donald Tilley for the murder of Suzanne Poll.

She also prosecuted former State Opera SA director Timothy Sexton for historic sex offences against music students.

South Australian Attorney-General Kyam Maher said Matteo was “an outstanding lawyer, and an excellent addition to the District Court”.

“As a prosecutor, she has proven herself time and time again as someone who can understand the nuance of detailed, complex and criminal matters,” Maher said.

“She has also shown great sensitivity and compassion when working with vulnerable victims – especially in the prosecution of sex offences often involving complainants who are children.

“I look forward to her making a significant contribution in her time on the bench and congratulate her on her appointment.”
