Goers announced his retirement this morning, with his final broadcast to take place on November 30.

The idiosyncratic critic and columnist began presenting the ABC evenings program in 2003, his battered old blue Volvo in the Collinswood carpark as his throaty voice and smoker’s laugh resonated across South Australian airwaves and as far as “the silver city” of Broken Hill.

Goers said today that the time was right to leave the studio.

“This decision has been some time coming and it feels like the right time for me to take a step back to focus on my writing, theatre and community connections,” he said.

“I’m incredibly grateful to the listeners. There is so much to celebrate locally and I’m proud to have spent the last 20 years doing just that.”

ABC Radio Adelaide manager Graeme Bennett said Goers had “developed a strong connection to audiences in Adelaide and South Australia and in particular, our local arts community”.

“Peter’s passion and unparalleled knowledge and experience will be missed by everyone at the ABC and our loyal audience,” he said.

“We wish him all the best in the future and have no doubt he will remain a colourful part of South Australian life for years to come.”

The ABC said details for access to tickets for Goers’ final show will be announced when confirmed.

His replacement will be announced later this year.

Goers’ retirement comes at a crucial time for ABC radio stations across the country which have been grappling with falling ratings, sparking a national internal review.
