State Library turns a new page

The State Library of South Australia has announced the appointment of Megan Berghuis as director following the retirement of Geoff Strempel, who served as director for seven years.

SLSA said Berghuis will guide the library through its next phase of growth and drive its strategic direction.

Berghuis has been at the City of Unley for the past 12 years, where she was most recently general manager of community and organisational development.

She is also sits on the Libraries Board of South Australia and is chair of the Public Libraries Committee.

SLSA said she “brings a wealth of experience and breadth of skills across the libraries network, cultural management and local government sector and is a strong advocate for the arts in South Australia”.

Berghuis will begin her new role on November 4.

More resignations at Riverland Wine

Riverland Wine has announced the resignations of executive officer Lyndall Rowe and grower engagement officer Charles Matheson.

The announcement comes a week after InDaily reported the resignation of Dr Darren Oemcke as independent chair of the management board at Riverland Wine.

“Lyndall and Charles have worked hard to support Riverland growers and winemakers through arguably some of the industry’s most challenging times,” Riverland Wine said in a statement.

Riverland Wine said it represents over 930 wine grape growers and 30 wineries in the Riverland.

As reported in InDaily, the Riverland region is experiencing an ongoing wine glut, leading to financial and personal struggles for wine growers across the region.

Thomas Foods charts new territory

Thomas Foods International has announced several key appointments as it looks to expand its international markets.

Anthony Stewart will transition from CEO of the company to executive director on its board.

In his new role, Stewart will focus on corporate governance, risk and key project delivery from a global perspective.

Meanwhile, Alexis Junin has been appointed as chief financial officer of Thomas Foods International.

Junin has 20 years of executive experience in advanced manufacturing in Australia and internationally, including as chief financial officer and CEO of Naval Group Australia.

Junin will be responsible for the financial stewardship of all Australian entities within Thomas Food International.

Shayne Newell has also returned to the business as group protein solutions manager, overseeing the commercial operation and development of the company’s meat co-products business globally.

Newell has 30 years of experience in the food manufacturing industry, including most recently as operations manager at Staughton Group.

Thomas Foods International is headquartered in South Australia and said it has “a proven track record for trading premium lamb, beef, mutton and goat products” and “specialises in meat processing and distribution globally across retail, wholesale and food service sectors”.

Long-serving Resthaven executive to retire

Tina Cooper has announced she will retire as executive manager of clinical governance and operational excellence at Resthaven Incorporated.

Cooper began as senior manager of residential services at Resthaven in 2009 and in 2011 she was promoted to executive manager of residential services.

Cooper was promoted to her most recent role in December 2023.

Resthaven said that “with remarkable attention to detail and clinical skills, Tina has ensured that Resthaven continues to be known for the high-quality care and services that we provide”.

“Resthaven has benefited immensely from Tina’s leadership, including her involvement on several national committees and forums. She has influenced the ongoing sector transformation and reform, ensuring that Resthaven’s best interests are represented,” it said.

Cooper’s last day at Resthaven will be on December 16.

Magnetite Mines has announced significant changes to its board following the completion of a review of its governance structure and cost base.

Among the changes is the appointment of CEO Tim Dobson to the board as managing director, effective immediately.

Meanwhile, Jim McKerlie has stood down as chair of the board for personal reasons, with non-executive director Paul White taking over as interim chair.

McKerlie will remain on the board as a non-executive director alongside Simon Wandke, who will continue his role as a non-executive director.

In addition, Peter Schubert will not stand for re-election as a non-executive director at the annual general meeting, while Dr Carmen Letton will also resign from the board.

Magnetite Mines said these changes will save it over $600,000 per annum and are aimed at streamlining operations and positioning the company for the next development phase of the Razorback Iron Ore Project.

A chief pharmacist for Star Pharmacy Group

Shannon Hewitt has taken on the role of chief pharmacist for Star Pharmacy Group.

Star Pharmacy Group said Hewitt’s is a critical role that “will deliver strong oversight for the company’s pharmacy services, requirements, industry connections and evolving industry landscape and be a key point of contact for the group’s pharmacists”.

Hewitt is an experienced pharmacist with over 24 years of practice in overseas, regional, rural and suburban pharmacy settings.

She has been with Star Pharmacy Group for the past three and a half years, where she was previously intern training program manager and a training specialist.

Before this, she was a senior pharmacist at Chemist Warehouse and a pharmacy manager at TerryWhite Chemmart and Haddad Pharmacy Group.

Based in Kent Town, Star Pharmacy Group has 60 pharmacies across New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia and said it is one of Australia’s fastest-growing pharmacy groups.

Brink Productions welcomes new board member

Brink Productions has welcomed Justina Gardiner to its board of directors.

Gardiner has two decades of leadership experience and is currently a board observer of Meals on Wheels SA.

Before this, she spent five and a half years at Perks, where she was general manager of corporate services and head of marketing and communications.

She has also held executive marketing positions at Haircare Group, San Remo Macaroni Company, Torrens University Australia and L’Oréal Canada.

“Justina is a dynamic force in the world of business, known for her ability to ignite change and drive growth across a range of industries, including luxury goods, education, distribution/manufacturing, FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods],” said Brink Productions, an Adelaide-based theatre company whose recent productions include Shore Break and Symphonie of the Bicycle.

Jumping on board at RMHC SA

Ronald McDonald House Charities South Australia has announced the appointment of Dr Shannon Schedlich and Lincoln Size to its board.

Schedlich is currently CEO of Siblings Australia and a non-executive director of Inclusive Sport SA.

Schedlich said she is “deeply committed to positive impact engagement and has forged a career that has allowed the pursuit of these causes through employment and directorships”.

Size is vice president of operations (Australia) of Global Philanthropic, a member of the finance, audit, risk and compliance committee of Rembrandt Living, a board member of Victim Support Service and a project consultant for NFP Success.

Speaking of the appointments, RMHC SA said Schedlich and Size’s “diverse skill sets will be invaluable” as it “continue[s] to provide vital support to families with sick or injured children”.
