The main manufacturing lot at the facility, which was shuttered in December after producing 10 billion bottles over 66 years, has been sold for an undisclosed amount to Adelaide’s Australasian Property Developments.

“This site has been a huge part of Adelaide’s working history, and we’re happy it will now be reactivated to go on supporting commercial, industrial and construction jobs,” Amatil group general manager of property Matt Toohey said.

The Thebarton site was eventually rendered unsuitable for modernisation by Coca-Cola Amatil due to adjoining developments and housing.

Production was relocated to new or expanded facilities in Western Australia and Queensland, while Coca-Cola Amatil still has about 170 employees in SA, largely focused on equipment servicing, distribution, sales and IT.

“We’re proud to have been a big part of South Australia’s history and equally proud to be a part of its future,” Toohey said.

Some equipment from Thebarton has been repurposed at sites including Papua New Guinea and Brisbane’s Richlands, with the latter now supplying all glass bottled beverages for Australia.

A smaller site adjoining the bottling facility has been sold to industrial supplier Jetwave, with a third site sold to Anglicare South Australia in 2018.
