Arrium cuts another 55 jobs from Whyalla

Oct 16, 2015

Regional South Australia is reeling from another round of resources job cuts with Arrium announcing a further 55 roles would go from its Whyalla operations in the next two years.

In a statement released on Friday morning, Arrium said it had undertaken a “thorough review” of its minerals processing operation in a move to save $100 million.

Earlier this year, Arrium announced the loss of nearly 600 jobs from its South Australian operations, Southern Iron, south of Coober Pedy.

Today, Arrium stated it had focused on efficiency, yield, utilisation and rate improvements to bring significant annual savings.

Further opportunities for cost savings in the magnetite stream will also continue to be explored, the company said.

“As part of these initiatives, there will be a restructuring of the Mineral Processing business unit, which will contribute a small portion of these overall annual savings.

“Unfortunately, these changes are expected to result in the reduction of up to 55 roles, with the new structure to be announced in the coming weeks.

“Management will ensure that all employees are treated fairly and with respect; communicate directly and frequently to keep people informed; provide support services throughout this process; engage the unions to discuss the restructure; and continue its commitment to safety, which is even more paramount in times of change.”

Arrium stated it was confident the restructure would assist the long-term sustainability of the Whyalla steel business and underpin a competitive, world-class mining business.
