These two poems by Elene Kontonikas and JK Brand shine a spotlight on the much-maligned Australian wild dingo and its natural environs.
The Dingo
by Elene Kontonikas
It came from the shadows
from behind
a place you never expected
could contain so much.
From nothingness
it appeared
staring into your face
glaring at your fear.
Fast and furious
it came
emptying you of everything
but you and it.
And then
off it went
racing
leaving you behind.
Beyond the Fence
by J.K. Brand
Dawn comes brightly
with silence here
no song of river nor
orchard birds here
suddenly from behind dry tussocks
a land bridge or canoe traveller
from a green old world land
thriving here on a new one’s husk:
canis lupus dingo.
