Review: Africa Entsha

All the way from South Africa, this five-piece a cappella group exude such joy that it’s impossible not to get swept up in their energy. ★★★★

Not afraid to mix in a bit of western pop with songs more traditional to their culture, Africa Entsha keep things light and a little cheeky with a full set that will be enjoyed by a wide range of music lovers.

Exquisite harmonies and high-energy African dancing mixed with soulful and uplifting songs should have you smiling from the moment they start singing.

However, given their international performing experience, the group may have found the small audience at The Garage International @ NAAC (in the Norwood Institute building) somewhat reserved. The venue is beautiful, but being seated a long way back from the stage made us feel uncomfortably removed from the performers – and this is a show that begs you to get up off your seat and immerse yourself in the moment.

During their Adelaide Fringe season, Africa Entsha are also playing at the Adelaide Town Hall, but my recommendation would be to catch one of their two shows at the more intimate and relaxed Wheatsheaf Hotel.

Africa Entsha perform with such passion – whether singing of their country, a true love or their faith – they will leave you feeling that whatever you’re doing in this world, you should be doing it with the same energy.

Four stars

Africa Entsha are performing at The Garage International @ NAAC, The Wheatsheaf Hotel and The Garage International @ Adelaide Town Hall until March 17.
