With a working title of Desert King, the series is a six-episode drama series and is produced by local Paul Ranford (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Matrix Reloaded).

It will be shot in the Northern Territory and SA, with both jurisdictions funding production of the Netflix show including investment from the South Australian Film Corporation.

SAFC is also supporting post-production of the Netflix ‘neo-western’ which was created by Tim Lee (Mystery Road, Bump) and executive producer Ben Davies (Bondi Rescue, The First Inventors, Outback Ringer).

The state government expects Desert King to “significantly contribute” to the state’s economy and employ 240 locals across crew and cast.

According to Netflix, the fictional series chronicles generational clashes threatening to tear apart the Lawson family which runs the world’s largest cattle station.

“Sensing this once great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions – rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners – move in for the kill. Desert King is an explosive drama about power, family, land and legacy,” said Netflix.

It joins the likes of SA-made Netflix productions including thriller Run Rabbit Run starring Succession’s Sarah Snook and drama series Stateless starring Cate Blanchett.

SAFC CEO Kate Croser said she was delighted to welcome Netflix back to SA for “the largest Netflix series ever made in the state”.

“This major new series is the latest exciting example of the fruitful screen production alliance that exists between South Australia and Northern Territory,” Croser said.

She said SAFC’s Adelaide Studios production facilities and access to South Australia’s world-class crews and PDV providers make Adelaide a perfect base for productions filming at locations across both regions.

“The SAFC is proud to support this exciting new series which will utilise a majority South Australian crew comprising post-production services and key creatives, including top South Australian producer Paul Ranford,” Croser said.

Arts Minister Andrea Michaels added Desert King “is going to be a thrilling drama that is sure to captivate audiences around the world”.

“The six-part series is not only being filmed in South Australia, but post-production work will be taking place here too, creating even more jobs for our talented screen sector,” she said.

“Attracting major international streaming platforms like Netflix to South Australia speaks volumes about the remarkable skill and creativity of our Adelaide Studios.”
