A trade apprenticeship at a Port Augusta power station has sparked the creativity within Don Ellis, who describes the South Australian outback with tangible clarity in his first published poems.
Storm
Like the shadow of a menacing giant
the deep purple haze descends
creating an eerie half light.
The sun mustering all its energy
manages only to tint the edges
occasionally penetrating to touch
a high tree top or building.
An ominous silent stillness pervades the town
as it secures itself
from the inevitable onslaught of sand and wind.
A dust storm is imminent.
Summer Morning
The coolness of the night evaporates
quickly soaked up by the heat of the rising sun.
The coarse red sand starts to glow.
Things of the night
are transformed to things of the day.
A summer’s day is upon us.
Don Ellis holds an Advanced Trades Certificate in Fitting & Turning, a Diploma of Art Teaching, and his degrees in Education to doctorate level. Jewellery making and sculpting are also keen interests and these are his first published poems.
