From the hills to the sea, city to the vines, there’s plenty happening in South Australia to keep you entertained over the long weekend – including the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Hoot! Jazz Festival and McLaren Vale’s annual showcase of all things grape and gastronomic.

Hoot! Jazz Festival

Head to the Hills for a smorgasbord of jazz throughout the long weekend from local and international musicians including The David Helbock Trio, Detroit’s James Carter Organ Trio, Texan instrumental collective Snarky Puppy, Black Fedora Jazz, Grace Knight, Liam Burrows and Etype Jazz. Centred in Mt Barker, Hoot! opens tonight with a free street party and includes events in venues ranging from a funeral parlour and steam trains to wineries, Atelier (Cornerstone College of the Arts) and the festival club in Mt Barker Hall.

Adelaide Cabaret Festival

The Adelaide Cabaret Festival officially opens tonight, with a Variety Gala Performance in the Festival Theatre featuring cabaret acts backed by the Adelaide Art Orchestra. Other highlights over the long weekend include ’80s film star turned chanteuse and author Molly Ringwald (Dunstan Playhouse, June 7-9), juke-joint-style jazz and vintage blues singer Mojo Juju (Space Theatre, June 7-9), Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth (Festival Theatre, June 8-9) and Eddie Perfect’s Shane Warne The Musical (Her Majesty’s Theatre, June 5-9).

Sea & Vines

Degustation dinners, wine tastings, cheese and wine master-classes, “road trips”, live entertainment … there’s plenty of reasons to head to the McLaren Vale Bank SA Sea and Vines Food & Wine Festival this weekend. Events include a Latino long lunch with music to match at d’Arenberg, jazz music at The Barn, an Italian feast served up by Andre’s Cucina and Polenta Bar at Angove Family Winemakers, and a Spanish-themed celebration at Hardy’s Tintara with flamenco performances and food by Chimichurri Grill Food Truck.

Cabaret Fringe Festival

With 40 shows across 14 venues and no tickets over $30, the open-access Cabaret Fringe offers entertainment for all tastes and all budgets. This weekend you can catch acts such as Sidonie Henbest’s Cabaret Live! (La Boheme, June 9), Crazy with Sondheim (The Soul Box, June 8-9), Phi Theodoros’s Depression, The Musical (La Boheme, June 7-9), and Tears, Beers & Beautiful Girls (Harry’s Bar, June 5-13).

Hoodoo Gurus

If your taste is more rock than cabaret or jazz, then you can take a trip down memory lane with Aussie veterans the Hoodoo Gurus at The Gov this Sunday. After breaking up and then making up, the band last year put out a new best-of album titled Gold Watch: 20 Golden Greats – 30 years after the release of their debut single, “Leilani”. Fans can probably expect to see some of those hits traversed at this weekend’s gig, where the Gurus will be joined by Sydney garage rockers the Lime Spiders.

Adhocracy

The Waterside Workers Hall in Port Adelaide will be the venue for a “make ‘n’ show hothouse of artists making art” this weekend, when Adelaide theatre company VitalStatistix presents Adhocracy 2013. Open to artists and members of the public, the June 8-10 event includes workshops, an exhibition, artist talks and a showing of works-in-progress such as Love & Boats (an investigation of immigration, asylum seeking, human rights and love) and Run Into Yourself, by SA companies Sandpit and Closer Productions (a response to Closer Production’s upcoming feature film 52 Tuesdays).
