Melbourne Dance Theatre’s Run

Mar 01, 2015

Inspired by the film Run Lola Run and the biblical text “Run without becoming weary that you may obtain the prize”, this one-hour dance marathon dazzles with speed and virtuosity.

Run shuns the gimmicks, gadgets and grab-lines relied upon by some contemporary dance practitioners, grounding itself with strong technique, powerful execution and exhilarating ensemble work.

Choreographers Martin Sierra (previously a soloist wtih Saarlandisches Staatstheater Saarbrucken and Komische Oper in Germany and now MDT director), and Michelle Sierra (soloist with Saarlandisches Staatsheater Saarbrucken and guest artist with Klagenfurt Opera House in Austria, and now MDT assistant director) – in collaboration with the dancers of Melbourne Dance Theatre – have created a work that is essentially about itself. It’s a loop of exploration with slight differences that affect the outcome of the story each time.

Although the choreographic interpretation of the film is a little too literal at times, it nonetheless re-asserts itself with a series of stunning pas-de-deux that propel the piece toward the finish line. Brilliantly performed by dancers Robyn Begg, Jack Gibbs, Russell Leonard, Elise May Watson-Lord and Melissa Wilson, these interactions married unresolved dissonance with a threatening mass of overtones. Another race winner was Rebekah Conry, with her decadent and simmering interpretation of the “Lover”.

Run’s season at The Studio @ Holden Street Theatres has now ended.
