Considered a true heir of Django Reinhardt, Stochelo Rosenberg‘s name is synonymous with gypsy jazz. The Dutch guitarist brings his new power trio to Australia for the first time for the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, in a performance opened by 80 young Australian guitarists.
Fifty young South Australian performers from across the state will be joined by Brisbane’s Aurora Guitar Ensemble for the inaugural performance of the Adelaide Guitar Festival Orchestra. They will perform alongside guest soloists Festival Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan and his brother Leonard Grigoryan.
A new festival initiative in 2014 guitar teachers from across the state have nominated students to participate in a series of rehearsal workshops under the inspiring direction of Dr Paul Svoboda, a guitar ensemble specialist based in Brisbane. Participants range from primary school-aged to university level, and come from as far as Loxton and Goolwa.
Following this very special debut, Stochelo Rosenberg brings his new power trio to Australia for the first time. Rosenberg’s legendary flair and virtuosity are infused with unprecedented vigor through this collaboration with energetic young players Sebastien Giniaux (France) and Joel Locher (Germany). The performance will be a crossfire of unbelievable solos, breathtaking rhythms and constant invention, melded with the gypsy sense of entertainment.
After touring the world for 25 years with his band “The Rosenberg Trio”, Rosenberg decided to explore wider territories than the traditional Django Reinhardt/Gypsy Jazz classics and style, and to make room for upcoming new talent. In a musical family such as the Rosenbergs, where uncles, parents and grandparents had gained local and regional fame since the early 1900’s as violin players and Guitarists, Stochelo had no trouble finding the ideal partners to develop a new repertoire, welcoming two new soloists to join him in the next chapter of his career.
