The car hit the pole and rolled at about 6am, knocking power out to many properties and prompting Glen Osmond Rd to be closed across four lanes between Fullarton and Greenhill roads.

The 48-year-old driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Glen Osmond Rd is a major route into the city for Hills and Mt Barker residents and the collision and the full road closure prompted detours and lengthy waits for in-bound traffic, but traffic out of the city is now open with restrictions.

Emergency services and power workers have been at the scene for much of the day, with work to restore power expected to continue for the next few hours.

SA Power Networks said at about midday that dozens of properties were still blacked out but it estimated power would be returned by late afternoon.
