A man is suing the school in the Supreme Court for unspecified damages and alleges the school knew of the abuse and instigated a cover-up. The claims were revealed in court documents Health rebate changes rejected The Federal Government has been given another double-dissolution election trigger with the Senate blocking changes to private health insurance. The Government wanted to introduce a means test on private health insurance rebates, but the Senate has rejected the legislation. Independent Senator Nick Xenophon and Family First Senator Steve Fielding sided with the Opposition to block the changes. Failing maths The quality of students completing year 12 maths has deteriorated to ''dangerously low'' standards, according to research commissioned by Australia's leading universities, prompting calls for universities to provide students with remedial classes. The news follows the launch of the Rudd government's plans to change the way maths is taught in schools under a new national curriculum. The Federal Government will be pressed by the Senate to enhance its paid parental leave scheme after the Greens and independents said they would use Tony Abbott's rival plan to force a better deal for mothers. But the Opposition Leader's colleagues rounded on him for failing to consult them before announcing he would hit big business with a $2.7 billion tax increase to fund a six-month, paid parental leave scheme. A contrite Mr Abbott told his party room he had made ''a leader's call''. ''Sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission,'' he said. He said the rise would be temporary and unwound when the nation's debt was repaid, which is not due to occur for a decade. Sources said Mr Abbott did not seek the input of his most senior colleagues, including Julie Bishop and Nick Minchin, in the development of the policy. About 20 MPs and senators at the meeting expressed concern, mainly about the lack of process. -Fairfax HENDRIK GOUT A CLOSE RACE It's a close race, this election, say the polls. But as Hendrik Gout reports, the chequered flag is already waving. Coalition livid with Abbott
