SACOSS chief executive Karen Grogan said the cost of living update released today found that over the last three years the true cost of rent in South Australia had risen by 15 per cent, the cost of electricity had gone up by 14.4 per cent, and food had increased in price by more than 18 per cent. Firepower boss faces criminal charges This compared to rises in the minimum wage (12.9 per cent) and youth allowance/unemployment benefit (about 10 per cent) over the same period. The update will form part of SACOSS’s submission to the State Wage Case, which will be handed in later today. “We’re pushing for the Industrial Relations Commission in South Australia to take heed,’’ Ms Grogan said. “If we see a zero (increase) these people will be going backwards.’’ She said the problem with the CPI (inflation) figure was that it masked the cost of essential goods, leading SACOSS to introduce the new series of six-monthly updates. The number of people in employment fell by 21,400 in June, taking the jobless rate to a six- year high of 5.8 per cent. Jewellery store armed robbery A large amount of jewellery was stolen in an armed robbery at a jewellery store on Glynburn Road last night. Police are searching for three men involved in the hold-up.
